Rainy days giving your kids the blues? Tania, over at the Trying to Conceive blog, provides us with a wonderful guest post, to brighten your kids day up with Fun Kids Crafts for a Rainy Day.
Keeping small kids happy and entertained can be a bit of a challenge on a rainy day! I am sure that every mother has been through days where the whole family is desperate to leave the house, and boredom is making the kids whiney and hyperactive. These days tend to be days where mom is a little short of inspiration too, at least in my experience. Wouldn’t it be great if you had some fun crafts to pull out, just like that? These are some ideas for fun things to do when staying home is your only option.
If you need to make do with stuff you already have lying around the house, don’t think that the television is the only entertainment you can provide. Your kitchen offers much more fun! If you are someone who always keeps basic baking ingredients in your house, like me, then baking cookies is something that is really easy, and most kids love! It doesn’t have to take any time at all, but if you have your kids mix the ingredients and make the cookie shapes, it can go on for hours too!
Cutting some potatoes in half and carving basic shapes into them creates instant and fun stamps. You can use potato stamps with an ink pad, but finger paint also does the job nicely. If you want to take it a step further, you can also print your potato creations onto textile with textile paint. This is a fun way for your kids to help make some beautiful t-shirts (to wear around the house!).
Beans, pasta, and rice can be a lot of fun too. Glue some shapes onto paper with your kids, and encourage them to create a mosaic of dry foods. We have made bean men and pasta trees before, and my kids had the time of their lives.
And how about folding some sheets of colorful paper in half, and then again? Cutting little triangles, twirly shapes, circles, or whatever you like, and then opening the sheet of paper up again, can result is some cute little “table cloths”, and will allow your kids to practice their fine motor skills. After the creation is completed, your kids can draw on their new “table cloth”, and sprinkle it with glitter.
When all else fails, I sometimes resort to face-painting. Right, the guy at the mall can paint wonderful butterflies, spidermen, and clowns onto your kids faces, but isn’t it much more fun for a kid to do that all by themselves? When they are done, they can paint mommy’s face too. Face paints are inexpensive, and they are far too much fun to use just on birthdays or for the holiday season.
